Coffee has long been a favorite morning pick-me-up for many, but a new study suggests that it may also have long-term benefits for brain health. Researchers found that drinking coffee daily was linked to a reduced risk of developing dementia later in life.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, followed over 1,000 participants aged 60 and older for an average of five years. Participants were categorized into three groups based on their coffee intake: non-drinkers, infrequent drinkers (1-2 cups per week), and daily drinkers (at least 1 cup per day).
The findings revealed that participants who drank coffee daily had a 30% lower risk of developing dementia compared to non-drinkers. Even those who drank coffee infrequently had a 20% lower risk. These results suggest that there may be a dose-response relationship between coffee consumption and dementia risk reduction.
It is not entirely clear how coffee may protect against dementia, but researchers believe caffeine and other bioactive compounds in coffee could play a role. Previous studies have shown that caffeine has neuroprotective effects and may reduce the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
